Salif Keita at the Long Beach Terrace Theater PDF Print E-mail
Grammy nominated afro-pop singer-songwriter, Salif Keita, is coming to the Long Beach Terrace Theater on Tuesday, June 15th, at 7:30pm to perform his music and raise awareness towards albinism. The concert is a presentation of Long Beach Central Area Association (LBCAA) and MusicUNTOLD.

Keita is also known as The Golden Voice of Africa, however he was not always regarded so highly. In addition to the problems of growing up with albinism, Keita encountered the opposition of his family to his interest in becoming a singer. The traditions of his ancestry excluded members of the nobility from becoming singers. Keita’s decision to become a musician broke an important taboo as only the lower class makes its living from music in Mali.

Persevering through these challenges, Keita left Djoliba for Bamako in 1970, where he spent time as a street musician and playing in bars. The first group he worked with was the Super Rail Band, a state-sponsored ensemble that was based at a Bamako railway station hotel. Keita left the Rail Band in 1973 and joined Les Ambassadeurs International. This group developed the fusion between traditional music and western electric influences. Restricted by the limited opportunities and political climate in Mali, the group moved south and set up in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast, where they performed and recorded during the late 1970s.
